Rumors of Hope

Despite everything, the world is not devoid of hope.

Rumors of distant lands talk of places where life is less brutal, where people can live in peace and quiet and prosperity, though many people doubt such places are real. Some call those who speak of hope liars and false prophets. But many listen to the stories, and dream.

I. The Eastern Ocean

There are some who believe that if you travel east, through the vast dead lands and arid deserts, the wasteland that the lord Cha'mutte drained of life to power the Godfall, you will reach a far-distant ocean. Here, the rumors say, people of all kinds prosper together, in community.

A black-and-red woodcut shows travelers crossing a cracked desert toward the sea, above a table where people of different kinds share bread. Its inscription reads: There is bread beyond the waste.

II. Beyond the Mountains

There are some who believe that if you cross the mountains, if you manage to avoid the hobgoblin forts and the press gangs and the dragonspawn that make their home in the high peaks, you will reach a cold northern land, protected by a deep magic stronger than all the chaos glass in the world.

A folded, fraying scrap of blue cloth depicts a lone traveler looking toward warm village windows beneath a luminous aurora. Small lettering reads: The light they cannot extinguish.

III. The Wandering Island

The strangest tale of all is of an island, protected by a storm that evil cannot pass. It is said that the island moves, that is never lingers long in one place, that it is carried on the backs of storm giants across the oceans of the worlds. But if you can find it, and cross the storm, a paradise awaits. A land of beauty, where fish are plentiful and dragons of silver and gold great you with joy, a land of song and dance and camaraderie.

An ornate blue-and-gold circular print shows a welcoming island community carried by storm giants, enclosed by fish, shells, waves, and silver and gold dragons. Its ribbon reads: The island travels with us.

Whether these distant places are real, or just tall tales, none can say for sure.
