Narrative

In the Feywild, Yvan, Drou, and Fazoth creep towards a clearing in the forest, where a large tree sits, emitting a cursed song: the Singing Tree, already showing signs of serious damage from numerous scorch marks. Launching an attack, Fazoth strikes with Witch Bolt as the tree drags Fazoth and Yvan close with its roots, grappling them. Yvan uses Misty Step to escape; Drou charges in with her daggers but they have little effect on the hard bark of the tree. As the tree bludgeons the party with its branches, Fazoth also escapes with Misty Step and launches an Eldritch Blast. The song, however, grows louder, and buries into the minds of Fazoth and Drou, cursing and enraging them to attack indiscriminately. Despite Yvan’s Scorching Ray, the fire biting into the wood, the battle turns and nearly gets away from the party. Drou, enraged by the curse, attacks Fazoth, and Fazoth attacks Drou, knocking her unconscious, as Yvan finally brings down the Singing Tree with a Sorcerous Burst.
With the Singing Tree subdued, the party searches the area. Yvan notices that two mounds of roots and earth seem to be covering people; cutting through one (ruining Drou’s dagger in the process) reveals Vaelithar, a fae from Twilight’s Edge, still alive. He tells a story: him and his companion, Liraene, came across the tree recently, and fought it, nearly winning but were trapped in the end. While they were trapped, they felt the tree’s memories. A man from the mundane world, with an impossibly sharp battle axe, a glowing green gem attached, attacked and attacked, cutting the tree open and stealing its heart. Without a heart, its song turned to anger and violence.
Vaelithar says the heart must be returned to stop the song – the tree cannot be killed permanently, it will always regrow. Indeed, the party sees a small shoot has already sprouted from the soil around the fallen tree, which quickly decayed to dirt in the minutes after the battle. He does not know more, but says the party should speak to Aurenxis a transmuter and alchemist who used to travel in the Feywild a lot.
After speaking with Vaelithar, the party digs up the other mound. The woman inside has passed away; Vaelithar takes a pendant from her neck to bring back to Twilight’s Edge, but offers an enchanted fey pact wand and a mundane but pretty ring to the party.
The party leaves the Feywild, and decides to try to close the Nightsong Roots portal. After some experimenting, they manage to combine Yvan’s magical talents and Drou’s musical talents: Yvan freezes the wind chime roots of the portal, so they play a discordant tune, and Drou plays the original correct tune to open the portal. The discordance causes each chime in turn to fracture and crack. After cracking four of the seven chimes, the party decides that is enough, and heads back towards Haldrenn, camping about half way.
